Kevin Crowston

Kevin Crowston is a Distinguished Professor of Information Science in the School of Information Studies at Syracuse University, Syracuse, NY, USA. He serves as Editor-in-Chief of the journal Information, Technology & People and previously held the same role at ACM Transactions on Social Computing.

Dr. Crowston earned an A.B. in Applied Mathematics (Computer Science) from Harvard University and a Ph.D. in Information Technologies from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

His research investigates new forms of organizing enabled by information and communications technology. Empirically, he studies coordination-intensive processes in human organizations—particularly virtual or distributed teams—while theoretically characterizing coordination problems and evaluating systems that support collaborative work. Specific projects include the development practices of Free/Libre Open Source Software (FLOSS) teams and the design of technologies that support citizen-science research, both supported by the U.S. National Science Foundation. His latest project examines how evolving technologies are reshaping the practice of journalism.

Dr. Crowston is an active contributor to the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), frequently serving on program committees for the Computer-Supported Cooperative Work (CSCW) conference and delivering invited lectures on open collaboration, AI and the future of work, and public engagement in scientific research.
