Kevin Cokley is a Professor of Psychology at the University of Michigan’s College of Literature, Science, and the Arts and holds a courtesy Professorship at the Marsal Family School of Education. His research focuses on African American psychology, particularly exploring how psychological and environmental factors shape academic outcomes and mental health among Black students. Key areas include the impostor phenomenon, academic disidentification, and the impact of school racial composition.
Dr. Cokley’s work challenges anti-Black stereotypes, such as the myth of Black anti-intellectualism, and advocates for institutional reforms to address educational inequities. He has authored influential books like The Myth of Black Anti-Intellectualism and edited volumes addressing anti-Black racism. His NIH-funded research examines threats to diversity in health sciences.
Previously, he chaired the Department of Educational Psychology at the University of Texas at Austin. His scholarship integrates empirical research with advocacy, emphasizing culturally informed models to support minoritized students.
