Kevin B. Chen is a Lecturer in the School of Art at San Francisco State University (SFSU). He has been active in the Bay Area arts community for over two decades as a curator, visual artist, and educator. His roles include co-chair of the City of Oakland's Public Art Advisory Committee, manager of the de Young Museum’s Artist Residency Program, and Program Director of Visual Arts at Intersection for the Arts for 15+ years. He has curated over 70 exhibitions and public programs, collaborating with institutions like Yerba Buena Center for the Arts and the Asian Art Museum.
Chen’s curatorial work focuses on contemporary art and public engagement, emphasizing innovative exhibition strategies through projects such as the John Erickson Museum of Art (JEMA) and Museum of Pocket Art (MoPA). His research interests intersect art education, community-driven curation, and site-specific installations. He has exhibited his own artwork nationally, including at The Kitchen (NYC) and the Harn Museum of Art (FL).
Chen has served on funding panels for organizations like Creative Capital Foundation and the Creative Work Fund. His professional website highlights studio projects like Accordion Books and collaborative curatorial initiatives, reflecting his commitment to accessible, experimental art practices.
