Dr. Kevin C. Halling is a distinguished Professor in the Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. With dual MD and PhD degrees from the University of Kansas, he has established himself as a leading expert in molecular pathology and genetic diagnostics. His leadership roles include serving as Co-Section Head of the Molecular Anatomic Pathology Laboratory and previously as Section Head of the Molecular Genetics Laboratory and Program Director for the Molecular Genetic Pathology Fellowship program.
Dr. Halling's research interests center on molecular diagnostics, cancer genomics, sarcoma classification, and the application of advanced techniques like fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) and next-generation sequencing to improve cancer diagnosis and treatment. His work has significantly advanced the understanding of tumor genetics, particularly in renal neoplasia, sarcomas, and molecular biomarkers for cancer stratification. His recent publications demonstrate a strong focus on gene fusions, DNA methylation profiling, and the integration of molecular data with histopathological findings.
His extensive publication record shows a consistent trend toward increasingly sophisticated molecular characterization of tumors, with particular emphasis on sarcoma classification through genetic markers. Recent work has expanded into single-cell transcriptomics, pan-cancer biomarker detection, and the clinical validation of next-generation sequencing assays for routine diagnostic use. His research bridges basic science with clinical application, directly impacting diagnostic pathology practice.

As Program Director for the Molecular Genetic Pathology Fellowship from 2002-2012, Dr. Halling played a pivotal role in training the next generation of molecular pathologists. His laboratory research has been supported by numerous institutional and professional organization grants, focusing on improving diagnostic accuracy and precision in cancer pathology. His committee work with organizations like the American Medical Association and American College of Pathologists has helped shape molecular diagnostics standards across the field.
Dr. Halling's laboratory work has centered on developing and validating molecular diagnostic techniques, particularly fluorescence in situ hybridization applications for cancer diagnosis. His research team has been instrumental in establishing protocols for detecting gene rearrangements in sarcomas and other malignancies, creating standardized approaches now used in pathology laboratories nationwide.
