Kevin Andrew Hawkins is a dedicated music educator and minister at Evangel University, where he serves as director of the University Chorus and Men’s Vocal Ensemble. He teaches courses in Basic Conducting, Music History Survey, and Music Education, while also supervising student teachers and advising music education students. Affiliated with the Department of Music in the College of Arts and Sciences, he plays an active role in shaping future music educators within a Christian academic environment.
His educational background includes a B.S. in Music Education from Missouri State University (1985), an M.M. from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary (1988), and a D.M.A. in Music Education from Boston University (2015). He also completed post-graduate studies at the University of Southern Mississippi and Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, and holds lifetime K–12 teaching certification in Missouri.
Dr. Hawkins specializes in music education, choral conducting, and worship leadership. His teaching philosophy emphasizes equipping pre-service teachers with practical leadership experience through directing ensembles and real-world teaching supervision. He is passionate about helping students grow spiritually and professionally, using their musical gifts to impact others. His research and professional focus lie in K–12 music pedagogy, vocal ensemble training, and integrating faith with musical excellence.
Throughout his career, his choirs have performed at prestigious events including the Missouri Music Educators Association Conference (1999, 2001, 2004, 2006, 2008), the National American Choral Directors Association Conference (2005), and the Southern Baptist Convention (2009, 2011, 2012). Though no formal publications are listed, his influence is evident through performances, leadership, and educational outreach.
His notable awards include the Prelude Award (2001), multiple GRAMMY Signature School honors (2001, 2003), and being named Teacher of the Year for Springfield R–12 Schools (2005–2006). He was also a candidate for Missouri Teacher of the Year and has served as a choral adjudicator and clinician across the Midwest.
Dr. Hawkins supervises student teachers, advises music education majors, and serves on the Education Department’s Standards & Approval Committee. He is actively involved in professional organizations such as the National Association for Music Education (NAfME), American Choral Directors Association (ACDA), Missouri Music Educators Association (MMEA), and Missouri Choral Directors Association (MCDA). His work bridges academic rigor with spiritual formation in music education.
He leads the University Chorus and Men’s Vocal Ensemble, providing students with performance and leadership opportunities. These ensembles have served as platforms for worship and excellence, reflecting his dual commitment to artistic quality and faith-based service. His leadership extends beyond the classroom into chapel services and community engagement, fostering deep personal connections with students.
