Kevan Herold, MD is the C.N.H. Long Professor of Immunobiology and of Medicine (Endocrinology) at Yale School of Medicine. He holds fully joint appointments in both the Department of Endocrinology and the Department of Immunobiology, and maintains affiliations with numerous Yale research centers including the Yale Cancer Center, Diabetes Center, Diabetes Research Center, Human and Translational Immunology Program, Yale Center for Systems and Engineering Immunology (CSEI), and the Yale Stem Cell Center. As chair of NIDDK TrialNet, he leads an international network dedicated to Type 1 diabetes prevention research.
Dr. Herold's research program centers on the immunological mechanisms of autoimmune diseases, with a primary focus on Type 1 diabetes. His work spans from basic laboratory investigations of beta cell-immune system interactions to clinical trials of novel immunotherapies. The lab has made significant contributions to understanding how beta cells respond to immune attack and inflammation, challenging the notion that they are merely passive victims in autoimmune diabetes. Recent work has expanded to studying autoimmune diabetes development in patients receiving cancer immunotherapies and immune responses to viral infections including SARS-CoV-2.
His most notable achievement is serving as principal investigator for the clinical trial demonstrating teplizumab's effectiveness in delaying the onset of clinical Type 1 diabetes by approximately two years, leading to its FDA approval. Current research includes investigating how latent viral infections like EBV may enhance the efficacy of diabetes therapies, exploring mechanisms of checkpoint inhibitor-induced diabetes, and developing novel approaches to preserve beta cell function. His publication record shows consistent high-impact research, with multiple 2025 publications in journals including Nature Communications, Journal for ImmunoTherapy of Cancer, and Diabetes.
