Kerstin Pfeiffer is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Languages & Intercultural Studies at Heriot-Watt University’s School of Social Sciences. She also serves as the Deputy Associate Executive Dean (Academic Quality) for the Edinburgh campus. Her academic background includes a Magister Artium from Johannes Gutenberg-Universität Mainz and a PhD in English Studies from the University of Stirling, focusing on medieval religious drama and emotion theory. Her research intersects performance studies and heritage studies, emphasizing embodied engagement and the sociocultural roles of performance in shaping identities. She has led projects like CoHERE, exploring bilingual theatre’s role in identity formation, and co-led the SIEF BASE working group on bodies, affects, and emotions. Key roles include membership in the Intercultural Research Centre and external examining for German at the University of the West of Scotland (2018–2022).
Research interests include theatrical performances as tools for community-building, cultural sustainability, and social change. Current projects address regional identity through festivals and ecological themes in biblical theatre. She supervises PhDs on topics like migrant identities, maritime heritage, and practice-based performance. Grants include Horizon 2020-funded CoHERE (2016–2019) and internal funding for Deaf theatre participation. Teaching spans undergraduate courses in cultural studies, German language, and sustainable development.
Her work contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goals, particularly cultural sustainability and community resilience. Recent activities include participation in SIEF Congresses and workshops on multilingual theatre.
