Kerry N L Avery serves as Associate Professor in Applied Health and Care Research within the Department of Population Health Sciences at Bristol Medical School, University of Bristol. Based at the NIHR Bristol Biomedical Research Centre and Royal College of Surgeons Bristol Surgical Trials Centre, she co-leads methodological workstreams focused on surgical evidence generation.
Her educational background includes a BSc and PhD from the University of Bristol. As a research methodologist with over 20 years' experience, Avery develops patient-centred innovations to enhance surgical research quality and patient outcomes. Her expertise spans patient-reported outcome measures, electronic PRO systems, core outcome sets, and recruitment interventions for complex surgical interventions.
Recent publications (2025) demonstrate consistent focus on surgical methodology, patient-centered outcomes, and trial design across oncology, digital health, and surgical innovation domains. Her work prioritizes methodological rigor while ensuring research relevance to patients and decision-makers.

Avery secures substantial research funding as Principal Investigator for the NIHR-funded LOTUS-DESIGN project (2025-2028) and Chief Investigator for the ROSE trial. She co-applicants on major trials including Sunflower, ROMIO, TADPOLE, and ALPACA, while leading patient and public involvement in the NIHR Surgical and Peri-Operative Care Translational Research Collaboration.
She co-leads the Outcomes Working Group of the MRC-NIHR Trials Methodology Research Partnership and collaborates with international entities including EORTC, COMET initiative, and WHO-sponsored projects through the Centre for Surgical Research and ConDuCT-II.
