Kentaro Tsubaki is the Favrot Associate Professor of Architecture and Associate Dean for Opportunity and Representation at Tulane University's School of Architecture. He holds a B.Sci. in Physics from Kyoto University, and dual architecture degrees from the University of Colorado (M. Arch I) and Cranbrook Academy of Art (M. Arch II). His research focuses on materiality, tectonics, and construction logic, emphasizing 'imperfect extension' as an alternative to precision-driven design trends. His work has been nationally recognized, including the JAE Best Design as Scholarship Article Award (2014) for his 2012 article on fabric-forming techniques.
Teaching emphasizes material-based exploration in studios and seminars, bridging physical constructs and representational methods. Notable projects include NOLA Machi-ya and Resilience Reinforce, addressing adaptive urban systems. Prior to academia, he practiced as an associate at PKSB Architects in New York (1997-2006).
Recent publications explore climate-adaptive urban surfaces and ancestral water management in Iran, reflecting a shift toward socio-ecological resilience. He has lectured internationally and contributes to design pedagogy through innovative studio methodologies.
