Kenneth Hinkel is a Professor in the Department of Geography at the University of Cincinnati. With over 30 years of polar research experience, his work focuses on periglacial geomorphology, climatology, and spatial analytical techniques in Arctic regions. He holds a Ph.D. in Geology from the University of Michigan (1986), an M.S. in Physical Geography (University of Michigan, 1982), and a B.S. in Geography from Michigan State University (1976).
His research spans:
- Permafrost dynamics and active layer monitoring
- Arctic lake systems and thaw lake basins
- Indigenous knowledge integration in climate research
- Urban heat island effects in polar regions
Dr. Hinkel leads and collaborates on numerous NSF grants, including projects on:
- Circumarctic Lakes Observation Network (CALON)
- Paleoenvironmental reconstructions using indigenous knowledge
- Ground temperature variability in polar regions
He has published over 100 peer-reviewed articles and serves on multiple editorial boards. Dr. Hinkel previously served as President of the United States Permafrost Association.
