Dr. Kenneth H. Marcus is a Professor of History at the University of La Verne, affiliated with the College of Arts and Sciences. He holds a B.A. in History (Distinction) from UC Berkeley, an MBA from Groupe ESCP in Paris, and a Ph.D. in History from the University of Cambridge. His research focuses on transnational cultural connections between Europe and the Americas, African American arts, and music history in Los Angeles. Notable works include Musical Metropolis: Los Angeles and the Creation of a Music Culture (2004) and Schoenberg and Hollywood Modernism (2016). He has served as past-Director of the International Studies Institute and past-President of the Historical Society of Southern California.
His research examines intersections of music, migration, and identity, with recent studies exploring Holocaust composers like Hanns Eisler and Arnold Schoenberg’s role in shaping modernist culture. Current projects include a work on arts and human rights. Teaching specialties include Los Angeles history, European history, and world history.
Publications span over 60 articles and reviews, with contributions to journals like Journal of Central South University and International Journal of Enhanced Research. His work bridges historical scholarship with interdisciplinary approaches, emphasizing music’s role in societal change.
