Professor Kenneth Gergen is a Senior Research Professor in the Psychology Department at Swarthmore College and President of the Taos Institute. His academic career spans over five decades, with affiliations including the University of Buenos Aires (Honorary Professor), Nanjing Normal University (Hongguo Professor), and Kyoto University (Fulbright Fellow).
- Education: B.A. (Yale, 1957), Ph.D. (Duke, 1962), and honorary doctorates from Tilburg University, Saybrook Institute, and the University of Athens.
Research Interests center on social constructionism, challenging essentialist views of the self and exploring relational alternatives in psychology, education, and therapy. His work addresses technology's impact on identity, positive aging, and dialogic approaches to social transformation. He advocates for a shift from mirroring reality to world-making in psychological research.
Scientific Awards include a Guggenheim Fellowship, Alexander von Humboldt Prize, multiple Fulbright Fellowships, and honorary doctorates. He has received recognition from the American Psychological Association, Media Ecology Association, and Society for Humanistic Psychology.
