Kenneth Castro is a Clinical Professor and Research Track faculty member at Emory University’s Rollins School of Public Health (RSPH), holding joint appointments in the Hubert Department of Global Health and the Department of Epidemiology. He also serves as the Director of the Fulbright-Hubert H. Humphrey Fellowship Program and Co-Director of the Emory TB Center. A globally recognized expert in tuberculosis (TB) and public health, Dr. Castro’s career spans over 40 years, including leadership roles at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), where he directed the Division of Tuberculosis Elimination and served as a flag officer.
His education includes an MD from SUNY Stony Brook School of Medicine, residency in Internal Medicine, and fellowship in Infectious Diseases at Emory University. He completed the CDC’s Epidemic Intelligence Service (EIS) program, furthering his epidemiology expertise.
Dr. Castro’s research focuses on global health, infectious diseases, and TB elimination strategies. He has authored over 185 publications and led initiatives to address TB/HIV co-infection, drug-resistant TB, and public health preparedness. Notably, he co-developed CDC’s guidelines for latent TB infection management and contributed to global TB control frameworks through WHO and USAID.
His awards include the CDC Charles C. Shepard Lifetime Achievement Award and recognition as a 'Public Health Hero' by The Lancet. He currently advises USAID on global TB strategies and collaborates with international health organizations to advance equitable health policies.
