Professor Kenneth Byrne is a leading academic in environmental and soil sciences at the University of Limerick, affiliated with the Bernal Institute and Department of Biological Sciences. His research focuses on soil carbon dynamics, greenhouse gas emissions, and land use impacts on peatlands and forests. Byrne holds advanced qualifications in Forestry (B.Agr.Sc., UCD 1992), Soil Science (Ph.D., UCD 1999), and Civil Engineering (M.Eng.Sc., UCC 2011), with additional teaching certification (Grad. Dip., UL 2018).
He leads the Co-Centre for Climate + Biodiversity + Water’s Spoke 4 (Investing in Carbon and Nature) and coordinates the PeatFor project on peatland management. Byrne contributes to global initiatives like the IPCC and IPBES, and serves on editorial boards for journals such as PLOS Climate and Frontiers in Forest and Global Change.
His research spans peatland restoration, carbon sequestration in forests, and sustainable agriculture. Key projects include analyzing GHG fluxes in rewetted peatlands, evaluating afforestation viability under EU policies, and optimizing cattle production for reduced environmental impact. Byrne has secured significant grants and awards, including the 2024 President’s Research Output Award and a 2007 Nobel Peace Prize contribution via IPCC work.
Teaching responsibilities include courses on soil science, grassland management, and food production systems. Collaborations span Ireland and Europe, addressing climate mitigation, biodiversity, and land-use trade-offs.
