Professor Kene Igweonu serves as Pro Vice-Chancellor and Head of London College of Communication at the University of the Arts London (UAL). He previously held leadership roles including Academic Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Creative Industries at Middlesex University and Head of School of Music & Performing Arts at Canterbury Christ Church University. His academic leadership spans immersive practices, creative education, and international theatre.
Prof Igweonu’s research focuses on African theatre, Black British theatre, diaspora performance, and somatic practices like the Feldenkrais Method. He led projects such as a European Regional Development Fund initiative for screen-based media innovation and a British Academy-funded initiative supporting researchers in African nations.
He is Chair of DramaHE, President of the African Theatre Association, and a Member of the AHRC Peer Review College. His fellowships include the Higher Education Academy and Leadership Foundation. His work emphasizes interdisciplinary collaboration across media, design, and performing arts to enhance student employability and creative enterprise.
Prof Igweonu’s grants include a £1.2M ERDF project for post-production networks and a British Academy award for capacity-building in African research. He has authored/co-authored over 30 peer-reviewed publications on topics ranging from Nigerian drama to intercultural performance.
