Kendra Rai

Kendra Rai is an Assistant Professor and Head of Design & Head of Costume Design at the Department of Theatre, Virginia Commonwealth University (VCUarts). She holds a dual degree in Costume Design and Technology from Pennsylvania State University. With over 100 design credits across theatre, opera, and dance in international, DC, NYC, and regional stages, she is a leading figure in performance design.

Education: B.S. in Costume Design & Technology from Pennsylvania State University.

Research interests focus on innovative costume design techniques, interdisciplinary collaborations, and the intersection of technology with theatrical production. Her work emphasizes craftsmanship, including draping, textile manipulation, and stagecraft management.

Awards: Three Helen Hayes Awards (Outstanding Costume Design), nine nominations, and a Princess Grace Honorarium. Recognized as a member of United Scenic Artists.

Professional Experience: Served as draper, craft artisan, Costume Shop Manager, and faculty member at Gallaudet University, University of Pittsburgh, and Howard University. Active in both academic and professional theatre communities.

Labs/Teams: Leads Costume Design programs at VCUarts, fostering technical and creative excellence in students.
