Ken Weitzman is an Associate Professor of Dramatic Writing at Stony Brook University (SBU). He holds an MFA from the University of California, San Diego and a BA from the University of Michigan. His work focuses on using sports as a lens to explore cultural, political, and historical themes. He has received prestigious awards including the Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching (2023-24) and the Godfrey Teaching Excellence Award (2017). His plays have been produced internationally, including seal boy at Riverside Studios (London) and Fire in the Garden featuring Sean Astin.
Ken’s plays often blend athletic narratives with societal critique, exemplified by Halftime with Don (2018 NNPN Rolling World Premiere) and The Catch. He has collaborated with major institutions like the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and South Coast Repertory. His teaching spans playwriting, screenwriting, and documentary theatre, with recent courses including EGL328 Documentary Theatre Creation and THR207 The Theatre of Baseball.
Ken’s awards reflect both artistic and pedagogical excellence. His plays Covenant and Spin Moves have earned national recognition. He previously taught at UCSD, Emory University, and Indiana University (as Head of MFA Playwriting).
