Professor Ken Seng Tan held dual affiliations throughout his career: as a faculty member at the University of Waterloo's Department of Statistics and Actuarial Science (1998–2019) and later as Professor and Director of the Insurance Risk and Finance Research Centre at Nanyang Business School, NTU (2019–2023). He held prestigious positions including Canada Research Chair, University Research Chair, and Adjunct Professor roles across institutions. His academic leadership included directing WatRISQ and leading the READI project in Indonesia.
Education: BMath, MMath, PhD in Actuarial Science from the University of Waterloo (thesis awarded Outstanding Achievement in Graduate Studies).
Research Focus: Pioneered work in quantitative risk management, actuarial science, and enterprise risk analysis. His transnational initiatives in China and Indonesia significantly advanced actuarial education and regulatory frameworks. Authored over 140 publications and served on major journal editorial boards.
Awards: Recognized with SOA's Hachemeister and Redington Prizes, Sun Life Fellowship, and NTU's President's Chair in Actuarial Risk Management (2021). His legacy includes mentoring hundreds of students and fostering international academic collaborations.
Labs/Teams: Founded and directed the Insurance Risk and Finance Research Centre at NTU, and contributed to WatRISQ's operations at Waterloo. Maintained strong ties with institutions like Central University of Finance and Economics in Beijing.
