Ken Kollman is the Frederick G.L. Huetwell Professor and Professor of Political Science at the University of Michigan. He holds dual appointments in the Department of Political Science and the Center for Political Studies (Institute for Social Research). His academic roles include Director of the Center for Political Studies (since 2015) and former Director of the International Institute (2011-2014). He earned his PhD from Northwestern University in Political Science and has held leadership roles in various academic programs, including co-founding the Constituency-Level Election Archive (CLEA).
Education: PhD (Political Science), Northwestern University; MS (Mathematical Methods in Social Sciences), Northwestern; BA (Magna Cum Laude), University of Notre Dame.
Research focuses on computational social science, comparative and American politics, electoral systems, and federalism. Key works include Perils of Centralization (2013), Outside Lobbying (1998), and The Formation of National Party Systems (2004). He co-authored the widely used textbook The American Political System (now in its third edition).
Grants and funding: Over $5.2M raised as PI/co-PI, including Mellon Foundation grants for global Islamic studies and election data archives. Awards include the Lijphart/Przeworski/Verba Dataset Award (2012) and the Leon Epstein Book Award (2005).
Service includes editorial roles at American Journal of Political Science and leadership in international education programs (e.g., Summer Programs in Rome and Florence). Labs/teams: Co-PI of CLEA, affiliated with the Center for the Study of Complex Systems.
