Kemo Usto is a Postdoctoral Researcher at the Department of Engineering Technology and Didactics, Technical University of Denmark (DTU). His research focuses on integrating planetary awareness into built environment design through interdisciplinary approaches combining architectural design, industrial ecology, and systems thinking. Key themes include minimizing material consumption via regenerative technologies and achieving climate goals in urban development.
Education: PhD in Architecture from Aalborg University (2023), titled Safe Sink Tectonics: Towards a Metabolism of the Built Environment Within Planetary Capacities, supervised by Lea Holst Laursen and Marie Frier Hvejsel.
Research emphases include urban constructed wetlands, biobased materials, and systemic approaches to sustainability. Recent work explores frameworks for multipurpose urban wetlands and carbon sequestration strategies. He actively engages in academic outreach, including guest lectures on autopoietic urban systems and holistic design processes.
Current project: Autopoietic Urban Systems (2024–present), focusing on urban resilience and systemic design methodologies.
