Kelsey Mankel, Ph.D., is an Assistant Professor in the School of Communication Sciences and Disorders and the Institute for Intelligent Systems at the University of Memphis. She joined the faculty in 2023. Her research focuses on the cognitive neuroscience of hearing, particularly how the brain processes complex sounds like speech and music using EEG and eye-tracking. She examines the influence of music training, learning, noise exposure, and individual differences on auditory perception and neuroplasticity. Dr. Mankel directs the Cognitive Neuroscience of Hearing Lab (CNHL), emphasizing both basic science and clinical applications.
Dr. Mankel holds a B.S. in Neuroscience, Psychology, and Music from Central Michigan University and a Ph.D. from the University of Memphis. Her work bridges auditory perception, cognitive neuroscience, and clinical audiology, exploring how neuroplasticity shapes hearing and communication.
Her recent research highlights trends in auditory neuroscience, including neural mechanisms underlying speech-in-noise processing, the role of visual cues in cochlear implant users, and the interplay between musical skills and speech encoding. Articles frequently address neuroplasticity, EEG methodologies, and individual differences in auditory processing.
