Kelly Wilz is a Professor in the Department of Media Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. Her work bridges education, media literacy, gender, politics, democracy, and popular culture, with a primary focus on rhetorical constructions of gender, violence, and dissent in U.S. war culture and American politics.
- PhD, Communication and Culture, Indiana University
- MA, Communication Studies, Northern Illinois University
- BA, Communication Studies, Gustavus Adolphus College
Her research examines how dehumanizing and demonizing rhetoric in war contexts extends to broader patterns of social violence, particularly through intersectional discourses of race, gender, sexual orientation, and ethnicity. She also explores the impact of pop culture on resistance movements like #MeToo and the rhetorical strategies in political media such as The Daily Show.
Wilz's publications span topics including gendered violence in film, democratic deliberation in political satire, and critiques of feminist discourse. Her work has appeared in Women’s Studies in Communication, The Wiley-Blackwell Companion to The War Film, and The Lily, with recent contributions analyzing the intersection of pop culture and social change post-#MeToo.
