Dr. Kelly Hussey-Smith is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Art at RMIT University, Australia. She specializes in photography as a social practice, the politics of representation, and art education. Her affiliation with RMIT’s Contemporary Art and Social Transformation Research Group (CAST) underscores her commitment to socially engaged research and pedagogy. She is based at the City Campus and actively supervises research students in areas such as carceral aesthetics and decolonial approaches to representation.
Her research focuses on the civil potential of art and photography, particularly in creating counter-histories and fostering community partnerships. Dr. Hussey-Smith’s work intersects socially engaged art, visual culture, and decolonial theory, with a current emphasis on visual politics, youth history-making, and collective art practices. She frequently collaborates across disciplines to address local issues through creative practice.
Dr. Hussey-Smith has been recognized for her contributions with prestigious awards, including:
- ACUADS Teaching Award for her work with 'The Photo Lab' and 'Doing Visual Politics'
- RMIT Award for Socially Engaged Curriculum for The Nurses and Midwives Art Exchange
In supervision, she guides creative practice PhD and Master’s candidates exploring topics like carceral aesthetics and settler-colonial histories. Her collaborations include projects with organizations such as the Nepal Picture Library, Care Leaves Australasia Network, and the National Gallery of Victoria.
