Kelly Doran, PhD, RN, FAAN is an Associate Professor in the Department of Family and Community Health at the University of Maryland, Baltimore School of Nursing. She serves as Co-Director of the Building Healthy Behaviors Across the Life Span Organized Research Center, located in Room 645D of the School of Nursing Building, and holds the position of Director of Health and Wellness at the UMB Community Engagement Center.
Dr. Doran's research focuses on worksite health promotion with healthcare workers, behavioral health interventions for cardiovascular health, mindfulness and stress/burnout prevention interventions, health disparities, and RN-led community focused programs to improve health inequalities. Her work particularly emphasizes interventions for long-term care settings, substance use treatment, and community outreach to vulnerable populations. She employs innovative methods including ecological momentary assessment, wearable sensors, and peer-delivered interventions to address health challenges in underserved communities.
Analysis of Dr. Doran's recent publications reveals a strong focus on improving health outcomes for both healthcare workers and vulnerable populations. Her work spans cardiovascular health promotion in long-term care settings, behavioral interventions for substance use disorders, and community-based outreach programs. A significant portion of her research addresses health disparities and develops culturally appropriate interventions for low-income and minority populations, particularly in Baltimore. Dr. Doran has secured substantial funding for her research, including as Principal Investigator for the Director of Health and Wellness position at the UMB Community Engagement Center (2021-present), the WHHIP-PLUS project funded by the American Heart Association (2019-2024), and as Co-Investigator on multiple grants addressing early career burnout prevention, recovery support for women with opioid use disorder, and the West Baltimore RICH Collaborative for health equity. She is currently accepting new PhD students and has served as advisor for numerous research projects focusing on vulnerable populations. Her grant portfolio demonstrates a consistent commitment to translating research into practical interventions that improve health outcomes in community settings.
As Co-Director of the Building Healthy Behaviors Across the Life Span Organized Research Center, Dr. Doran leads interdisciplinary teams developing and testing interventions to improve health behaviors across the lifespan. Her work with the UMB Community Engagement Center demonstrates her commitment to translating research into community practice, particularly through street outreach programs and nurse-run clinics serving vulnerable populations in Baltimore. Her research on sensorized work environments in nursing home settings shows her innovative approach to addressing workplace challenges through technology integration.
