Kelly Byrd

Dr. Kelly Byrd serves as a Senior Instructor in the Department of Leadership & Teacher Education at the University of South Alabama's College of Education and Professional Studies. Her career began in 1996, focusing on mathematics education and teacher preparation. She holds a B.S. in Mathematics from Florida State University (1993) and an M.A.T. in Mathematics from the University of Florida (1995), and is currently pursuing a Doctorate in Mathematics Education at USA.

Her teaching philosophy emphasizes fostering confidence in students' mathematical abilities and pedagogical skills. She teaches courses such as EDU 335 (Teaching Mathematics) and supervises preservice teachers. Her research centers on preservice teachers' knowledge, beliefs, and confidence in teaching mathematics and integrated STEM lessons, particularly in K-6 education. Collaborations with Dr. Elizabeth Allison include developing integrated math-science courses and arts-integrated mathematics workshops.

Dr. Byrd actively engages in outreach through roles like Academic Advisor for the K-6 Teacher Education Program and Arts in Integration Mathematics Consultant. She has served on the Faculty Senate, advocating for instructors, and contributes to initiatives like the Alabama Technology in Motion and SARIC programs. Her work bridges university and public school systems to improve mathematics teaching practices.

Professional activities include conducting teacher workshops, visiting classrooms for curriculum insights, and pursuing continuous professional development to enhance her mentorship effectiveness. Personal interests include family time near water, running, and tennis.
