Keith Mitchell

Keith Mitchell is an Associate Professor of English at the University of Massachusetts Lowell, affiliated with the College of Fine Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences. His career has centered on teaching literature, particularly African American and American works, with a focus on mentorship. He earned a BA from Emory University (1985) and a Ph.D. in Comparative Literature from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (2003). His research explores African American and African Diasporic Literatures, modern drama, and the works of authors like Toni Morrison, James Baldwin, and Percival Everett.

Dr. Mitchell emphasizes community engagement and has received prestigious awards including the Manning Prize for Excellence in Teaching (2020) and the Haskell Memorial Award (2024). He has contributed to edited volumes on Percival Everett and is currently working on a monograph about Black Literature and the Vietnam War. His teaching philosophy prioritizes critical thinking and life lessons, rooted in his belief that mentorship can profoundly impact students’ lives.

He has presented widely on topics such as queer discourse in Caribbean literature, ethics in Percival Everett’s work, and the intersection of race and memory in African American narratives. Mitchell’s dedication to DEI initiatives is reflected in his leadership roles at UMass Lowell and his efforts to diversify academic perspectives.
