Research Interests
Professor Kearnes specializes in:
- Universal Algebra: Congruence lattices, Maltsev conditions, and tame congruence theory.
- Lattice Theory: Residually small varieties and modular lattices.
- Combinatorics: Finite algebras with unique generator properties and permutation group analysis.
His work often bridges algebraic structures with model theory and computational complexity, as evidenced by his recent publications on neutrabelian algebras, dualizable structures, and commutator properties.
Student Advising
He has advised over 20 graduate students, including:
- Ph.D. Graduates: Matthew Nickodemus, Andrew Moorhead, Kevin Berg
- Master’s Graduates: Gena Boercker Pass, Leanne Conaway, Maya Ornstein
- Current Students: Khizar Pasha, Oscar Bender-Stone (Honors thesis in progress)
His students have explored topics ranging from Jónsson-Tarski algebras to higher commutator theory.
