Keith Hjelmstad is a President's Professor of structural engineering at Arizona State University (ASU) within the School of Sustainable Engineering and the Built Environment (SSEBE) under the Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering. His career spans academia and leadership, including a tenure as University Vice President and Dean of the College of Technology and Innovation at ASU (2008–2011), where he oversaw applied science, engineering, and technological entrepreneurship programs.
- Education:
- Ph.D., Civil Engineering, University of California-Berkeley
- M.S., Civil Engineering, University of California-Berkeley
- B.S., Civil Engineering, Colorado State University
Hjelmstad's research focuses on computational mechanics, earthquake engineering, structural stability, and optimization, with applications in nondestructive evaluation and numerical simulation of complex structures. He has authored two influential textbooks: Fundamentals of Structural Mechanics (2005) and Fundamentals of Structural Dynamics: Theory and Computation (2022).
As an educator, Hjelmstad has taught core courses such as Engr Mechanics I: Statics, Engr Mechanics II: Dynamics, and Intro to Deformable Solids for over a decade at ASU, alongside advanced research and thesis supervision. His leadership roles included shaping academic programs at ASU's Polytechnic campus and contributing to the Center for Simulation of Advanced Rockets at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He has served as associate editor for the Journal of Constructional Steel Research and the ASCE Journal of Structural Engineering.
