Keith Harmoney is a Professor and Range Scientist at the Agricultural Research Center of Kansas State University, located in Hays, Kansas. His work focuses on optimizing forage-based beef production systems in rangeland environments, particularly in the western two-thirds of Kansas. By studying grazing strategies, cattle nutrition, and land management practices, he aims to enhance beef production efficiency while ensuring ecological sustainability.
Research Interests include:
- Modified Intensive Early Stocking (MIES) systems for stocker and cow-calf operations
- Range response to fertilizer, pesticide, and burning interventions
- Control of invasive species like Old World Bluestem and honey locust trees
- Interseeding warm-season annual grasses into perennial pastures
Collaborating with producers, Harmoney tests management practices that address challenges such as shrinking pasture acreage and climate variability. His research is partially supported by the J. H. Baker Trust.
Professional Engagement involves advising farmers on rangeland recovery, particularly after disasters like the Starbuck Fire, and contributing to educational programs through field days and publications.
