Keith E. Whittington is the David Boies Professor of Law at Yale Law School, specializing in constitutional theory, judicial politics, and free speech. He previously served as the William Nelson Cromwell Professor of Politics at Princeton University (2006–2024) and held visiting roles at Georgetown, Harvard, and the University of Texas law schools. His research focuses on constitutional interpretation, the presidency, and academic freedom, with notable works including You Can’t Teach That! (2024) and Speak Freely (2018). He chairs the Academic Freedom Alliance’s Academic Committee and is a Hoover Institution Visiting Fellow.
Education: Ph.D., M.A. (Yale University, 1995/1992); B.B.A. and B.A. (University of Texas at Austin, 1990). Awards include membership in the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and fellowships from the John M. Olin Foundation and others.
Recent articles and commentaries address judicial impeachments, presidential authority, and free speech controversies. He hosts the Academic Freedom Podcast and frequently contributes to The New York Times, Wall Street Journal, and Lawfare. His work emphasizes the constitutional role of Congress in checks and balances, particularly through impeachment as a political tool.
