Dr. Keitaro Sou is a Professor at Waseda University's Faculty of Science and Engineering and the Waseda Research Institute for Science and Engineering. He has held various academic positions at Waseda University since 2003, progressing from Lecture to his current role as Senior Researcher (Professor) since July 2023. Previously, he served as Guest Researcher/Guest Associate Professor (2019-2023), Adjunct Researcher (2017-2019), and Associate Professor (2007-2017) at Waseda University, and was a Visiting Researcher at Nanyang Technological University's School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering (2019-2021).
His educational background includes a Doctorate in Engineering from Waseda University's Graduate School of Science and Engineering where he studied Polymer Chemistry (1995-2000), following his undergraduate studies in Applied Chemistry at Waseda University's School of Science and Engineering (1991-1995).
Dr. Sou's research focuses on nanomaterials and biomaterials with particular expertise in nanocapsules, temperature-responsive systems, and liposomes for biomedical applications. His work bridges fundamental nanotechnology with practical medical applications including drug delivery systems, diagnostic platforms, and biohybrid interfaces. He has made significant contributions to developing temperature-responsive liposomes that can release therapeutic payloads at precise locations and times, with applications ranging from neurotransmitter delivery for neuromodulation to pH regulation for dental applications.
His publication record demonstrates a clear progression from fundamental liposome research to increasingly sophisticated applications in drug delivery, diagnostics, and biohybrid systems. Recent work shows a strong emphasis on developing diagnostic platforms for rapid disease detection (particularly for SARS-CoV-2), advanced imaging techniques using squaraine probes, and novel applications of liposome technology in robotics and neuromodulation.
- Young Investigator Award (2007) - International Symposium on Blood Substitutes
- Award for Encouragement of Research in Polymer Science (2005) - The Society of Polymer Science, Japan
- Mizuno Toshiyuki Memorial Award (2000) - Waseda University
Dr. Sou leads the Sou Research Group, which maintains a strong interdisciplinary focus combining materials science, bioengineering, and medical applications. His research has resulted in 58 Scopus-indexed publications with 1722 citations (h-index 22) and 2666 Google Scholar citations (h-index 27, i10-index 42), demonstrating significant impact in the fields of nanomedicine and biomaterials. His work continues to push the boundaries of liposome-based technologies toward clinical applications.
