Keireine Canavan

Dr. Keireine Canavan is a Principal Lecturer at Cardiff Metropolitan University's Cardiff School of Art & Design, where she serves as a leading expert in textile design and sustainability education. With over two decades of experience at the institution (2004-present), she previously served as Programme Director of Textile until 2021.

Her educational background includes a PhD in 'Dayak to Digital: Traditional ikat for contemporary patterned knitted textiles' from Heriot-Watt University, an MDes in Textile Design with Computer Application, an MA in Knitted Textile Design from the Royal College of Art, and a BA (hons) from Liverpool. Before her academic career, she worked with prestigious fashion houses including Missoni and Thierry Mugler, and established her own knitwear brand in 1985.

Dr. Canavan's research focuses on the intersection of traditional weaving techniques and digital technology, with particular expertise in Al-Sadu Bedouin weaving from Kuwait, Iban Dayak backstrap ikat from Malaysia-Indonesia, and Patola weaving from Northwest Gujarat, India. Her publications demonstrate a consistent focus on cultural preservation, sustainable textile practices, and the semiotics of traditional textiles.

She has received notable recognition including the McFarlane Award for research excellence and contribution to the textile sector. Her scholarly impact extends internationally through her role as an external examiner for PhD candidates at institutions including the Royal College of Art, Heriot-Watt University, Middlesex University, and London School of Fashion.

Dr. Canavan maintains strong connections to the Gulf region, particularly Kuwait, where she has resided part of each year since 2004 with her family. She has developed specialized research on nomadic lifestyles, camels, and textile camel trappings, reflecting her deep engagement with Bedouin culture and traditional textile practices.
