Kei Kano is a Professor at the Science Communication Laboratory, Faculty of Education, Shiga University, Japan, and a Visiting Fellow at the Australian National University (ANU). He also serves as Director of the NISSAN Global Foundation and holds leadership roles in various educational and research institutions. With a PhD in Life Science from Kyoto University, his career spans science communication, teacher training, and policy advocacy.
His research focuses on inclusive science communication, culturally relevant STEM education, and the ethical, legal, and social implications (ELSI) of AI in education. Notable contributions include developing NHK’s educational TV programs like "Think like a Crow – Scientific Method" and award-winning science engagement initiatives.
Key awards include the 2017 and 2014 Prize for Science and Technology (MEXT) for science communication. Recent work addresses AI ethics in EdTech and traditional Japanese knowledge applications.
Grants and projects include the "ELSI of Educational Technology" JST/RISTEX program and cross-cultural STEAM education initiatives. He actively engages with policymakers and educators through workshops and conferences worldwide.
Labs/Teams: Leads the Science Communication Group at Kyoto University’s Institute for Integrated Cell-Material Sciences (iCeMS) and collaborates with ANU’s CPAS on global science communication projects.
