Kei-Hoi Cheung is a Professor of Biomedical Informatics & Data Science and Professor of Biostatistics at Yale University School of Medicine. His primary appointment is in the Department of Biomedical Informatics & Data Science, with a secondary appointment in Biostatistics. He is also affiliated with multiple organizations including the Alzheimer's Disease Research Center, Computational Biology and Bioinformatics program, Emergency Medicine department, NIDA Neuroproteomics Center, Yale School of Public Health, and Yale Superfund Research Center.
Dr. Cheung's research focuses on biomedical informatics with special emphasis on semantic web technologies, database integration, and natural language processing. His work centers on developing complex databases and informatics tools that enable robust interoperation and integration of bioscience data. He has established collaborations across numerous Yale departments including Genetics, Pathology, Computer Science, Biostatistics, Molecular Biophysics and Biochemistry, and Biology. His recent work explores how new data and metadata standards can be used to harmonize diverse environmental health information, using AI techniques like NLP to integrate data types and build environmental exposure knowledge graphs.
His publication record spans two decades with a consistent focus on semantic web applications in biomedicine, evolving to include natural language processing techniques applied to clinical text analysis. His work demonstrates a clear trajectory from foundational semantic web research toward practical applications in clinical settings, particularly in the analysis of Veteran Administration electronic medical records. His research has significant implications for data standardization, integration across research centers, and facilitating data reuse by the wider scientific community.
Dr. Cheung has served as Principal Investigator on multiple federal grants from NIH and NSF, and was Director of the Biostatistics and Bioinformatics Core of the NIDA Proteomics Center. He is a core faculty member of Yale's Ph.D. Program in Computational Biology and Bioinformatics and has co-edited two influential books: 'Semantic Web: Revolutionizing Knowledge Discovery in the Life Sciences' and 'Semantic e-Science'. He previously led the BioRDF task force (2008-2010) of the Semantic Web for Health Care and Life Sciences Interest Group, an international community focused on applying Semantic Web technologies in biomedicine.
