Dr. Kazuhiro Shiozaki is the 8th President of the Nara Institute of Science and Technology (NAIST), Japan, since April 2021. He previously served as a Professor and Deputy Director of the Division of Biological Science at NAIST, alongside roles as Advisor to the President on Global Partnership (2013-2017) and Education (2017-2019). He holds a BSc (1987), MSc (1989), and PhD (1992) in Molecular Biology from Kyoto University. His research focuses on molecular and cellular mechanisms of signal transduction in eukaryotes, particularly environmental stress and nutrient sensing, with implications for cancer biology.
Education highlights include postdoctoral research at The Scripps Research Institute (as a Human Frontier and American Cancer Society Fellow) and academic roles at the University of California, Davis (UC Davis), where he progressed from Assistant Professor (1998) to Professor (2008) in Microbiology, and became an Adjunct Professor in Microbiology and Molecular Genetics (2011).
His awards include the US National Academies Education Fellowship (2008-2009). His work bridges academia and administration, with contributions to global partnerships and educational strategies at NAIST. Current initiatives as President emphasize NAIST's role in fostering cutting-edge interdisciplinary research and talent development.
