Kay S. Sunahara is an Assistant Professor at the University of Toronto, cross-appointed to the Department of Near and Middle Eastern Civilizations since 2019. Concurrently, she serves as a Collections Technician and manages ceramic collections from ancient Greece, Rome, Etruria, Byzantium, and Prehistoric Europe at the Royal Ontario Museum (ROM). She also oversees the ROM’s Ceramic Petrology Laboratory, training graduate researchers in polarized light microscopy and ceramic analysis.

Dr. Sunahara’s research bridges archaeology and archaeometry, focusing on ceramic analysis, petrology, and socio-economic systems across Mesoamerica and the Mediterranean. Her work emphasizes the application of scientific methods to archaeological materials, particularly polarized light microscopy for ceramic studies. Publications highlight her expertise in Maya ceramic economies, settlement patterns, and non-urban complexity in Northwest Belize.
Her recent publications and laboratory leadership demonstrate a commitment to advancing archaeological methodologies and regional studies. At the University of Toronto, she teaches courses on scientific approaches to archaeology, including ceramic analysis and archaeometry.
As manager of the Ceramic Petrology Laboratory, she integrates fieldwork with laboratory training, fostering interdisciplinary collaboration between the ROM and academic institutions.
