Kay Dickinson is a Reader in the School of Culture & Creative Arts at the University of Glasgow. Previously, she held academic roles at Concordia University (2013–2021), Goldsmiths, University of London (2005–2012), King’s College London (2003–2005), and Middlesex University (1997–2003). She was a 2010–11 Society for the Humanities Fellow at Cornell University and a 2019 Distinguished Visiting Professor at MICA in Ahmedabad, India.
Her research focuses on Arab revolutionary media, labor practices in film industries, and global creative economies. Notable works include Arab Cinema Travels (2016), Arab Film and Video Manifestos (2018), and Supply Chain Cinema (2024), which examines offshored film production and educational systems. Her current project Fernando – A Song by ABBA explores the interplay between anti-capitalist symbolism and commodity culture.
Key grants include the 2024–2026 BA/Leverhulme Small Grant on migrant film labor and a SSHRC grant (2016–2021) on Arab uprising archives. Dickinson supervises PhD students in areas like Palestinian film soundtracks, cinematic nation-building, and Bollywood’s representation of Muslims.
She serves on editorial boards for journals like Journal of Cinema and Media Studies and book series such as Cinema and Media Cultures in the Middle East. Dickinson also advises organizations like ArteEast and participates in film festivals including the Ramallah International Film Festival.
