Kay Cutler is a Professor and Research and Professional Development Leader at the Fishback Center for Early Childhood Education (ECE) within South Dakota State University. She is affiliated with the School of Education, Counseling, and Human Development, focusing on child development, visual thinking strategies, design thinking, and early childhood education. Her academic roles include teaching courses like ECE 325, 360, and 488.
Education: B.S. in Psychology (University of Minnesota) and Ph.D. in Child Development and Family Studies (University of Texas-Austin). Professional memberships include NAEYC and NAREA.
Research interests emphasize visual thinking strategies in early childhood, design-thinking in interdisciplinary teams, and inquiry-based learning. Recent grants include a $52,298 South Dakota Space Grant Consortium award (2021-2023) for exhibit design and a $102,435 Department of Social Services grant (2020-2021) for practitioner-based coaching.
She holds a design patent for Konnectors (2022) and has multiple invention disclosures, including Explorer 44 and Sound Constructor.
