Kawsar R. Talaat, MD, is an Associate Professor at Johns Hopkins University's Bloomberg School of Public Health in the Department of International Health, with primary affiliation in Global Disease Epidemiology and Control. She holds multiple center affiliations including the Center for Immunization Research, Institute for Vaccine Safety, and Johns Hopkins Vaccine Initiative. Board certified in Pediatrics, Internal Medicine, and Infectious Diseases, Dr. Talaat serves as Principal Investigator for numerous clinical trials focusing on vaccine development and evaluation.
Dr. Talaat's research spans vaccinology, infectious diseases, and global health epidemiology with particular expertise in vaccines for influenza, malaria, Ebola, and enteric pathogens including Enterotoxigenic E. coli (ETEC) and Shigella. Her work prominently features controlled human infection models to evaluate vaccine efficacy and novel therapeutic approaches. She has extensive experience with Phase 1 and 2 clinical vaccine trials and currently leads COVID-19 vaccine trials in both adults and children.
Analysis of Dr. Talaat's recent publication record (2021-2025) reveals a strong focus on vaccine development for enteric pathogens, particularly through controlled human infection models, alongside significant contributions to understanding vaccine safety, immune responses to novel vaccines including mRNA platforms, and the epidemiology of neglected tropical diseases like Chagas disease. Her work bridges laboratory science, clinical investigation, and public health implementation with clear translational impact.

Dr. Talaat has served as Principal Investigator for early phase clinical trials spanning multiple vaccine platforms and pathogens. Her research program demonstrates strong collaboration across disciplines and institutions, with particular emphasis on translating basic immunological findings into practical vaccine development and implementation strategies. She has contributed significantly to understanding immune responses following vaccination, particularly through human challenge studies that provide detailed mechanistic insights.
Her work with controlled human infection models has established critical methodologies for evaluating vaccine candidates against enteric pathogens, providing essential data for vaccine development pipelines. Dr. Talaat's research addresses both immediate public health needs (such as during the COVID-19 pandemic) and longer-term challenges in global vaccine development for neglected diseases.
