Kaustavi Sarkar is an Associate Professor of Dance and Director of the Arts + Architecture Honors Program at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. She holds a PhD in Dance Studies (Digital Humanities) from The Ohio State University (2017) and an M.S. in Economics with a Minor in Finance from Texas A&M University (2006). Her research focuses on virtuosity in dance-theater, South Asian aesthetics, and social justice through embodied techniques.
Her honors include serving as Regional Director for the American College Dance Association (ACDA) mid-Atlantic region and leading the 'Dance and Community' research initiative recognized by ACDA. She founded the South Asian Dance Intersections journal and the Odissi Odyssey conference, the largest Odissi gathering outside India.
Key publications include Dance Technology and Social Justice (2024) and Shaping S Curves (in press). Her work intersects digital humanities, queer performance studies, and cultural anthropology. She has collaborated with prominent choreographers like Ananya Chatterjea and Aruna Mohanty, analyzing creative processes in South Asian dance forms.
Awards include Dance Studies Association recognition for her 2024 monograph and ACDA acknowledgment of her community-focused research. Her work bridges traditional Odissi performance with modern social justice frameworks, emphasizing systemic change through artistic collaboration.
