Professor Kaushik Mitra is a faculty member in the Department of Economics at the University of Birmingham, affiliated with the Birmingham Business School. He holds the rank of Professor and specializes in Macro and Monetary Economics, particularly in adaptive learning frameworks. His research explores topics such as fiscal and monetary policy design, economic stagnation, and expectations-driven dynamics.
Education:
- PhD in Economics, Cornell University (1997)
- MA in Economics, Cornell University (1993)
- MS in Economics, University of Calcutta (1991)
- BS in Economics, University of Calcutta (1989)
Research Interests: Professor Mitra’s work focuses on macroeconomic policy analysis, adaptive learning models, and the implications of non-rational expectations. He investigates how economic agents form expectations and how these influence policy outcomes, particularly in contexts like fiscal austerity, inflation targeting, and monetary policy inertia. His contributions include studies on price-level targeting mechanisms, labor market dynamics under uncertainty, and the nonlinear effects of fiscal policy interventions.
Publications: His research spans topics such as fiscal multipliers in stochastic models, long-run growth uncertainty, and the role of expectations in economic stagnation. Key areas include the analysis of policy regimes, forward guidance, and the stability of economic systems under heterogeneous learning rules.
Awards & Memberships:
- Member of the ESRC Peer Review College (2013–present)
- Associate Fellow, International Network on Expectational Coordination
- Organizer of the CDMA conference on adaptive learning (2011)
Grants & Labs: His work has been supported by grants focusing on macroeconomic dynamics and policy design. He leads the Macroeconomics and Finance Research Group at the University of Birmingham, fostering collaborations in theoretical and empirical macroeconomic research.
