Katy Shorey is an Associate Teaching Professor of Philosophy at Northeastern University's Department of Philosophy and Religion, within the College of Social Sciences and Humanities. She holds a Ph.D. in Philosophy of Science from the University of Missouri (2015). Her research focuses on criteria for evaluating scientific explanations and developing general accounts of explanation, including how to judge between better and worse explanations. In teaching, her work centers on active learning and problem-based assignments, conducted through collaborations with Northeastern’s Center for Advancing Teaching and Learning through Research.
Her academic affiliations include the Ethics Institute, and she teaches courses such as Debating Ethical Controversies, which integrates moral theory, social justice analysis, and experiential learning via ethics bowl competitions. Her scholarly interests bridge philosophy of science, ethics, and pedagogical innovation.
