Katrina Miranda is an Associate Professor in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the University of Arizona, serving as the Undergraduate Research Coordinator. She holds a B.S. in Chemistry from Northern Arizona University (1989) and a Ph.D. in Chemistry from the University of California, Santa Barbara (1996). Her postdoctoral training included studies at the University of New Mexico’s Department of Cell Biology and Physiology, followed by a Cancer Research Fellowship at the National Cancer Institute, NIH.
Her research focuses on redox biology, particularly the roles of nitric oxide (NO) and nitroxyl (HNO) in cellular signaling, metabolism, and disease. Key interests include the therapeutic potential of HNO donors in treating conditions like cancer, heart failure, and infections, as well as the biochemical mechanisms underlying oxidative stress and cellular adaptation. Dr. Miranda’s work bridges inorganic chemistry, biochemistry, and pharmacology, with applications in drug design and disease intervention.
Her scientific contributions span over three decades, with a strong emphasis on nitroxyl’s unique chemistry and its biomedical applications. Notable areas of exploration include HNO’s effects on cardiac function, cancer metabolism, and inflammatory processes. She has published extensively on redox signaling pathways and the development of novel therapeutic agents.
Dr. Miranda’s lab investigates molecular mechanisms of NO and HNO in health and disease, with particular attention to their roles in cancer, cardiovascular disorders, and microbial infections. Her research integrates chemical synthesis, biochemical assays, and in vivo models to advance understanding and treatment strategies.
