Associate Professor Katrina Anderson is a researcher and academic at the Australian National University's School of Medicine and Psychology. She serves as Lead Researcher for the MRFF Project 'To Know Me is to Understand Me: Digital Life Story Packages in Dementia Care Transitions' and is actively involved in multiple research initiatives focused on improving aged care systems and practices. Her work bridges clinical psychology and gerontology with a strong emphasis on practical applications in healthcare settings.
Dr. Anderson's research centers on achieving collaborative, co-designed research that transforms health and aged care provision and policies, with a specific focus on providing impactful outcomes for older people and their carers. Her work examines the complex relationships between residential aged care staff, the quality of care they provide, and the quality of life of people with dementia. She has pioneered volunteer programs in dementia and delirium care, particularly in rural hospital settings, and investigates how person-centered approaches can be effectively implemented in aged care facilities.
Her recent publications demonstrate a clear trajectory toward innovative solutions in dementia care, including digital life story packages, intergenerational programs, and volunteer-based interventions. These works consistently emphasize the importance of understanding the person behind the diagnosis and developing care models that respect individual identities and life histories. Anderson's research has significant implications for policy development and practical implementation in both residential aged care and hospital settings.
Dr. Anderson leads several major projects including 'Improving person-centred care in hospitals: Transitioning the Volunteer Dementia and Delirium Care Program training online' and 'The Know Me Dementia Program: Knowing the person behind the diagnosis.' She is registered to supervise research students and maintains a clinical psychology practice with Southern NSW Local Health District. Her work location is Room 108, Level 1, Building 39, Research School of Psychology at ANU.
