Dr. Katrin Ostertag is the Head of the Department of Sustainability and Infrastructure Systems at the Fraunhofer Institute for Systems and Innovation Research ISI. She leads research on sustainable technologies, resource efficiency, and policy design, with a focus on ecological modernization and innovation systems. Her work bridges academia, industry, and policy, addressing global sustainability challenges through interdisciplinary approaches.
Education: Studied economics with a focus on international economic theory and policy in Germany (Universities of Konstanz and Frankfurt/Main) and the UK (University of Brighton). Completed a PhD in 2002 at BETA/Louis Pasteur University (Strasbourg) on microeconomic aspects of energy efficiency. Holds a Marie-Curie Fellowship (1999–2000) and has authored over 100 publications.
Research interests include innovation diffusion of sustainable technologies, policy instruments for resource efficiency (e.g., certificate trading), and international comparisons of sustainability performance. She coordinates projects like 'r² Innovative Technologies for Resource Efficiency' and 'Ecological Structural Change toward a Green Economy.'
Publications highlight her work on circular economy barriers, green finance strategies, and organizational/social innovations in sustainability. She advises German federal ministries and contributes to national and EU policy frameworks.
