Katrin Losleben is a Professor of Feminist Research and head of a teaching unit at the Centre for Women's and Gender Research, UiT The Arctic University of Norway. Her work spans feminist theories, artistic research, and environmental humanities, with a particular focus on water studies, sound, and intersectionality. She leads the Arctic Auditories project (NFR 325506, 2021-25) and serves on the advisory board of WoVen (NFR 2021-26). Losleben is also co-editor of the European Journal of Musicology and active in networks including the Sustainability Academic Network (SUSAN) and Nordic Soundscape Research Network (NSRN).
Losleben's research centers on feminist new materialism, feminist pedagogy, and the intersections of gender, sound, and environmental studies. She explores how listening practices, particularly in relation to water, can foster sustainable futures and challenge traditional epistemologies. Her work often employs artistic research methodologies and emphasizes embodied knowledge, relationality, and the materiality of sound. She investigates how feminist and posthuman perspectives can transform approaches to environmental crises and promote more equitable and sustainable ways of being in the world.
An analysis of Losleben's recent publications reveals a strong thematic focus on water, sound, and feminist epistemologies. Her work frequently examines how listening practices can create new environmental narratives and foster sustainable transformations. There's a clear interdisciplinary approach, bridging gender studies, environmental humanities, musicology, and artistic research. Her publications often address the entanglement of human and non-human agencies, particularly in Arctic and aquatic contexts, using methodologies that combine theoretical analysis with embodied, sensory practices.
Losleben has secured significant research funding, most notably as PI of the Arctic Auditories - Hydrospheres of the High North project (NFR 325506, 2021-25). She previously led WP1 in the Prestige project (Balance program, RCN 281862, 2018-23). Her research is supported by various grants, including project funding from the Research Council of Norway. In teaching, she is responsible for courses including HIF-1300 (Gender Equality - an introduction), HIF-2300 (Gender Equality), and PhD courses on feminist theories and methodologies. She is also editor of LikestillingsBloggen.no and involved in initiatives like the UiT Balance Hub and Innovative Veiledningsteam (INVEI).
Losleben is actively involved in several research groups and networks, including Engaging Conflicts in a Digital Era (ENCODE), Prestige, ConGender, Center for Arctic Humanities, and Environmental Humanities. She leads the Arctic Auditories project, which explores sonic relationships with Arctic waters through interdisciplinary approaches combining artistic practice, feminist theory, and environmental science. This project involves collaboration with researchers across multiple institutions and disciplines, creating a dynamic research environment focused on innovative methodologies for understanding human-environment relations.
