Prof. Katja Taxis is a full Professor of Pharmacotherapy and Clinical Pharmacy at the University of Groningen, affiliated with the Faculty of Science and Engineering and the Groningen Research Institute of Pharmacy. She holds dual roles in the Faculty of Medical Sciences/UMCG through the Real World Studies in PharmacoEpidemiology, -Genetics, -Economics and -Therapy (PEGET) group. Her expertise focuses on optimizing medication use safety for vulnerable populations, including older adults with polypharmacy and individuals with chronic conditions, alongside interventions targeting infectious diseases and low-resource healthcare settings.
Education: MPharm from University of Hamburg, MSc and PhD from University College London School of Pharmacy. Prior to joining Groningen in 2004, she worked at the University of Tübingen as a researcher and lecturer.
Research Interests: Her work addresses medication safety across diverse populations and settings, emphasizing pharmacist-led interventions, hospital drug distribution system safety, and global health disparities in medication use. She leads the HAPPY PATIENT project targeting antibiotic stewardship in EU countries and investigates diagnostic accuracy in antihypertensive treatments.
Awards: Recognized with the 2012 'Paper of the month' award for impactful research on medication administration errors in neonatal care.
Teaching & Supervision: Programme Director for BSc/MSc Pharmacy programs, coordinates advanced pharmacotherapy and global health courses, and supervises thesis projects for bachelor/master students and pharmacy practice interns.
Labs/Teams: Leads the PharmacoTherapy, -Epidemiology and -Economics group, collaborating internationally on medication safety initiatives and drug utilization research through networks like EuroDURG (European Drug Utilization Research Group).
