Prof. Dr. Katja Siebecke is a full Professor at the Institute of Physiology, Faculty of Medicine, University of Duisburg-Essen, where she leads the Siebecke Working Group (AG Siebecke) at University Hospital Essen. Her research group is located in Institute Group I, Virchowstr. 171, 8th floor, Room 13.
Prof. Siebecke's research focuses on artificial oxygen carriers based on perfluorocarbons. Her team investigates functionality, toxicity, storage stability, and compatibility with clinically relevant carrier media. The working group explores the complex chemical and physical properties of these carriers, particularly the correlation between nanostructure, stability in carrier media, and mechanical resilience. Their work aims to develop functional artificial oxygen carriers that are as free of side effects as possible for use in patients with oxygen deficiency or in machine perfusion during transplantation.
Analysis of Prof. Siebecke's recent publications (2017-2024) reveals a strong focus on translational research bridging nanotechnology, physiology, and clinical applications. Her work spans pharmaceutical development of perfluorocarbon-based carriers, physiological testing in various organ systems, and clinical applications in transplantation medicine and emergency scenarios. The research demonstrates consistent progression from basic characterization to in vivo testing and clinical applications.
- Best Oral Presentation at International Symposium on Blood Substitutes 2024 (awarded to Fabian Nocke from her group)
- Poster Award at NRW Nanoconference 2023 (awarded to Fabian Nocke)
- Poster Award at 3rd CENIDE Conference 2023 (awarded to Jacqueline Hausherr)
Prof. Siebecke actively supervises numerous doctoral candidates and students across natural sciences and medicine. Her lab maintains strong connections with interdisciplinary networks including CENIDE (Center for Nano Integration), ZMB (Center of Medical Biology), and the Schering Foundation's Advisory Network. The research group appears well-integrated into both the university's medical research infrastructure and broader nanotechnology communities, facilitating translational research from basic science to potential clinical applications.
The Siebecke Working Group is part of a larger research environment at the Institute of Physiology that includes working groups led by Prof. Fandrey (focusing on oxygen-dependent gene expression) and Prof. Metzen (focusing on cell metabolism regulation). This creates a collaborative environment for oxygen-related research spanning molecular mechanisms to applied medical solutions.
