Katja Polman is an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Science at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, affiliated with the APH - Global Health department. Her work contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goals related to good health and well-being (SDG 3) and zero hunger (SDG 2). Her research focuses on infectious diseases, particularly schistosomiasis and HIV/AIDS, alongside malnutrition and public health interventions in resource-limited settings.
Research interests include:
- Schistosoma biology and schistosomiasis epidemiology
- Interactions between parasitic infections and nutritional status
- Impact of water/sanitation practices on child health
- Design and evaluation of public health interventions
Recent publications analyze malnutrition patterns in Latin America, pediatric undernutrition in Mozambique, and novel treatment approaches for schistosomiasis in African children. Her work frequently employs meta-analytic and systematic review methodologies.
Current research includes a 5-year project (2023-2028) developing a syndemic framework for HIV disease, addressing comorbidity dynamics with other infections and conditions. This project involves collaboration across disciplines and institutions.
Laboratory/fieldwork focuses on global health challenges in sub-Saharan Africa and Southeast Asia, with emphasis on translational research linking epidemiology to policy.
