Katja Mayer

Dr. Katja Mayer serves as Senior Scientist at the Centre for Social Innovation (ZSI) and holds a sociologist position at the University of Vienna, with prior teaching appointments at TU Munich and the University of Lucerne. Her current research since 2019 centers on the politics of open science and open data within artificial intelligence frameworks.

Her research spans Science and Technology Studies, Open Science, Open Data, AI Policy, Citizen Science, and Critical Data Studies. Dr. Mayer employs a transdisciplinary methodology informed by her background in the IT industry and former role as research advisor to the European Research Council President, actively shaping policy advice and science diplomacy initiatives around open research practices.

She has served as Principal Investigator for international research projects and rapporteur for the European Commission's 2018 Open Science Monitoring and Learning Exercise. Dr. Mayer mentors researchers in open science methodologies and has developed curricula for citizen science and critical data studies courses across multiple European institutions.
